Partial Hearing Unit

Welcome to the Partial Hearing Unit Page.

We have 9 children aged from 3 -11 years in different year groups throughout the school. Two of our children have cochlear implants and the rest wear digital hearing aids. They all receive in class support from Teachers of the Deaf and Hearing Support Assistants who have attained Level 1 British Sign Language or above.

The children are included as much as possible in their classes but sometimes need to work out of class in the unit either individually or in small groups.

All children are encouraged to learn basic signs to help them access the curriculum and there are opportunities for the rest of the school to participate in signed songs in class assemblies.

Our staff include Mrs Granath and Mrs Beament who are Teachers of the Deaf, and Bernice Ansa, Ruth Wallis and Tara Luxford who are Hearing Support Assistants.

We have a weekly visit from Hayley, who helps maintain hearing aids and radio aids. She also acts as a deaf role model for the children as she is deaf herself and is able to talk through any issues the children may want to discuss with her. Our Speech and Language Therapist Jo Berg visits the unit every week to work with the children on improving their speech and language skills.
